Premier League Power Rankings after week 1
The first weekend of the Premier League opened up with a 2-0 Arsenal victory and closed on Sunday with a 2-0 Manchester City victory. There were a couple of surprising results but a lot of the major signings made impacts during the opening weekend. Here are my power rankings after the first week of the Premier League season.
20. Aston Villa (0-0-1)
I have to call out Aston Villa as the worst performing team of the weekend. They traveled to Dean Court to face off against newly promoted Bournemouth and they lost 2-0 to the home side. Newly signed Diego Carlos wasn't very good defensively and the talents on offense only generated two shots on target during the game.
19. Southampton (0-0-1)
They traveled to Tottenham to play against the Spurs in a game they were expected to lose but Southampton got blown out 4-1 as they conceded four straight goals after opening the match with a 12th minute goal. The score could have been much worse and Southampton are lucky they only conceded four goals after the final whistle had blown.
18. Nottingham Forest (0-0-1)
It was always a tough ask to have Nottingham Forest travel to St. James Park on opening weekend and earn a result and they ended up losing 2-0. The match was very one-sided with Newcastle having ten shots on target and holding 62% possession during the match. I picked Nottingham Forest to survive this season during my predictions but this early result is concerning.
17. Crystal Palace (0-0-1)
In a way, I felt like Crystal Palace were unlucky to not earn a result against Arsenal but Crystal Palace only managed two shots on target at home against the Gunners. A lot of people are predicting Palace to finish near 10th this season but they didn't generate their usual spark in this match-up.
16. West Ham (0-0-1)
Manchester City absolutely dominated West Ham and Manchester City were able to get the 2-0 victory but City are clear favorites in any match-up they play in. I think West Ham fans just wish their team had more fight back in this game and that they could have challenged better.
15. Wolves (0-0-1)
I was really hoping for a standout defensive performance by Wolves in their game against Leeds United but they ended up losing 2-1 against a side with a lot of turnover during the summer. Leeds United barely survived in the Premier League last season and this was a surprise result.
14. Everton (0-0-1)
They ended up losing 1-0 to Chelsea in a game that Chelsea did hold control of the game but Everton deserves some respect for nearly earning a draw despite missing Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
13. Manchester United (0-0-1)
Well that was disappointing. The appointment of Erik Ten Hag was supposed to bring new life to this historic and successful club and on opening weekend they end up losing 2-1 at Old Trafford to Brighton. The defense during the two Brighton goals were shocking and the finishing on the other end left a lot to be desired.
12. Leicester City (0-1-0)
There has been a lot of noise and rumors surrounding Leicester City and some of their top players leaving the club, so this opening weekend was definitely hard to predict for them. They opened up in the first half with a 2-0 lead and they looked in control but Leicester collapsed in the second half conceding two goals and they ended up with a 2-2 draw against Brentford.
11. Brentford (0-1-0)
As mentioned with Leicester City, this was a crazy game with Brentford coming back from 2-0 down at halftime. Brentford deserves a lot of respect for being resilient and earning the result in this match-up on the road.
10. Liverpool (0-1-0)
This was not a great start to the season for Liverpool as they ended up fighting for a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Fulham. Liverpool were expected to dominate this match-up but they didn't look like the Liverpool that nearly won the title last season.
9. Fulham (0-1-0)
Aleksandar Mitrovic has entered the Premier League in style as the Serbian scored two goals against Liverpool during their 2-2 draw. I was super impressed with the performance of Fulham during this match-up against Liverpool and i'm excited to see how they perform this season.
8. Bournemouth (1-0-0)
Despite being dominated in possession, Bournemouth were able to generate some quality chances against Aston Villa and earn the 2-0 victory. The newly promoted side had goals from Jefferson Lerma and Kieffer Moore as they earned the three points.
7. Leeds United (1-0-0)
A close match-up against Wolves but Leeds United were able to get the three points and manager Jesse Marsch showed that Leeds can still compete with his new signings and they are hoping to improve on last season. I was surprised with their result and i'm intrigued to see how they push forward this season.
6. Chelsea (1-0-0)
A super close 1-0 victory against Everton wasn't convincing enough to give Chelsea fans confidence as they hope to challenge for the top of the league this season. The lone goal was a penalty goal and more will be expected moving forward from their forward line.
5. Newcastle (1-0-0)
A fairly dominant home performance against newly promoted Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are hoping to find themselves in a strong position by the winter transfer window given their owners strong financial support.
4. Brighton (1-0-0)
Graham Potter might honestly be one of the most underrated managers in all of European football. It's amazing to me how Brighton showed up to Old Trafford and jumped ahead 2-0 by halftime and held out in the second half for the victory. Such an underrated manager and team.
3. Arsenal (1-0-0)
After last seasons disastrous opening game for Arsenal, they rebounded with a solid 2-0 victory on the road against Crystal Palace. William Saliba looked phenomenal defensively and Gabriel Jesus is finding his footing as Arsenal's number nine. Arsenal can definitely push for a top four finish if they continue performances like this.
2. Tottenham (1-0-0)
What was scary about the 4-1 victory for Tottenham against Southampton is that Harry Kane and Heung-min Son didn't even score in the match. Tottenham earned secondary scoring and Antonio Conte has the depth and talent to push for a top four finish this season.
1. Manchester City (1-0-0)
Erling Haaland scored two goals in his opening Premier League game and Manchester City won 2-0 against West Ham in a match that they controlled from the start. Repeating as Champions is likely and they are beginning the season on the right foot.
