Bundesliga week 2 Predictions:
The first weekend of the Bundesliga season was very intriguing and it involved plenty of action with 33 goals and 3 red cards in nine matches. Bayern Munich opened the season with a 6-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt while Freiburg, Koln, Union Berlin and Monchengladbach all earned great results. My predictions last week have me placed at a 5-4 record for the season. Here are my predictions for week 2:
Borussia Dortmund @ SC Freiburg
Both teams walked away with opening day victories as Freiburg smashed Augsburg 4-0 while Borussia Dortmund won a very close 1-0 contest against Bayer Leverkusen. Concerns of Dortmund’s attacking front are very real as Karim Adeyemi left the previous game early with injury and Sebastian Haller is still missing from the line-up. Last season Freiburg was able to earn the 2-1 victory when these two sides played at the Europa-Park Stadion in Freiburg. A big storyline in this match-up will be the return of Nico Schlotterbeck to Freiburg. I’m feeling a draw in this match-up as Dortmund’s back line will hold up fairly strong.
Prediction: 1-1 Draw
VfL Bochum @ Hoffenheim
On the opening weekend, Bochum lost a tough 2-1 game against Mainz while Hoffenheim lost 3-1 to Monchengladbach after Stefan Posch received a red card just 19 minutes into the match. Last season Bochum was able to win on each occasion against Hoffenheim but I still like Hoffenheim in this home match-up. Look out for Andrej Kramaric and Georginio Rutter upfront in this game.
Prediction: 2-1 Hoffenheim
FC Augsburg @ Bayer Leverkusen
The opening managerial career for FC Augsburg’s Enrico Maaßen was rough as the club lost 4-0 to SC Freiburg while Bayer Leverkusen lost in a close battle against Borussia Dortmund. Last season Bayer Leverkusen absolutely dominated FC Augsburg in their two match-ups as they out-scored Augsburg 9-2 overall. In 22 Bundesliga matches with FC Augsburg, Bayer Leverkusen have an impressive 15-7-0 record. This might be a blowout victory for Leverkusen.
Prediction: 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen
FC Koln @ RB Leipzig
The opening weekend saw FC Koln absolute dominate Schalke 3-1 after Dominick Drexler was sent off in the first half and Schalke had to play with ten men. RB Leipzig had a lot of chances against Stuttgart but they failed to capitalize and the result was a 1-1 draw. Last season RB Leipzig went 1-1-0 against FC Koln including a 3-1 victory at home. The match is at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig and I expect a home victory.
Predicton: 3-0 RB Leipzig
Eintracht Frankfurt @ Hertha Berlin
It has been a rough week for Eintracht Frankfurt as the club lost 6-1 to Bayern Munich and then on Wednesday lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in Finland for the UEFA Super Cup. The club has to travel back to Berlin and prepare for a match-up with Hertha Berlin who are looking to win after a 3-1 loss to Union Berlin during match day one. I think this is a tough match-up to predict but I think this will end in a draw.
Prediction: 1-1 draw
VfB Stuttgart @ Werder Bremen
The two clubs earned draws over opening weekend with Stuttgart earning the draw at home against RB Leipzig while Werder Bremen drawing Wolfsburg 2-2. These teams are fairly evenly matched but I felt like Werder Bremen are maybe just a step ahead in this early part of the season. Look out for Niclas Fullkrug, Jens Stage and Leonardo Bittencourt for Werder Bremen in this match-up to improve on a strong opening weekend performance.
Prediction: 2-1 Werder Bremen
Borussia Monchengladbach @ FC Schalke
It was a rough return to the Bundesliga for Schalke as Dominick Drexler was sent off in the first half and the club lost 3-1 to FC Koln while surrendering 76% possession and allowing 12 shots on target. Monchengladbach won 3-1 against 10 man Hoffenheim and it was nice to see Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea begin the season strong. The last time these two sides met Borussia Monchengladbach won 3-0 and I believe they can earn another result this weekend.
Prediction: 2-0 Monchengladbach
Union Berlin @ FSV Mainz 05
Both clubs earned solid victories during matchday one as Union Berlin beat their rivals Hertha Berlin 3-1 while Mainz were able to beat Bochum 2-1. Last season Union Berlin won on each occasion against Mainz while out scoring them 5-2 during the two games. I actually like Mainz in this match-up if Jonathan Burkardt and Angelo Fulgini can produce offensively for the home side.
Prediction: 2-1 FSV Mainz 05
VfL Wolfsburg @ Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich opened the season on fire with a 6-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt while Wolfsburg earned a draw against Werder Bremen. Bayern Munich won 4-0 against Wolfsburg last season at the Allianz Arena and they have a 23-2-0 record at home against Wolfsburg in their all-time record. Sadio Mane, Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller hope to build on strong performances from the first weekend.
Prediction: 3-0 Bayern Munich
