Bundesliga Team of the Season
Updated: Oct 15, 2021
The Bundesliga is considered one of the top four leagues in European football and the season has opened with plenty of excitement. Heading into matchday 8, Bayern Munich, Leverkusen, Dortmund and Freiburg are all close at the top of the standings with plenty of football to play in what should be a good season. I thought I would take a quick look at the Bundesliga team of the season at this point in the year, so here are my picks for the Bundesliga team of the season.
Goalkeeper: Lukas Hradecky (Bayer Leverkusen)
This was a tough decision as no goalkeeper has really stood out among the others but Lukas Hradecky has been solid for Leverkusen in 7 games with a 5-1-1 record and 3 clean sheets. The 31 year old will be tested this upcoming weekend as Bayer Leverkusen play top seeded Bayern Munich. Honorable mentions to Mark Flekken of Freiburg and Robin Zentner of Mainz.
Defense:
1. Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)
Very few players have performed better than Alphonso Davies to start the season as the left back Canadian has appeared in all 7 games for Bayern with 2 assists and an average player rating of 7.57 (ranked 1st among defenders). The superstar has also helped the Canadian international team earn results in World Cup Qualifiers.
2. Nico Schlotterbeck (SC Freiburg)
When the season started I felt like Freiburg had a decent chance of finishing midtable and Nico Schlotterbeck would be a big reason why but he has exceeded my expectations to start the season. He has performed strong defensively in every game so far this season and Freiburg are currently one point behind Bayern Munich for first place in the league.
3. Konstantinos Mavropanos (VfB Stuttgart)
The 23 year old defender played 21 games for Stuttgart last season after joining the club from Arsenal on loan but he has been amazing this year in the final season of the loan deal. He has 2 goals and 1 assist in 7 games after not scoring any goals last season and he has a player rating of 7.28 to start the season. The loan with Arsenal has an option to buy and assuming he continues this strong performance, Stuttgart should definitely sign him.
4. Raphael Guerreiro (Dortmund)
The 27 year old Portuguese international has been great playing down the wing for Dortmund to start the season as he has 3 goals in 6 games. He is starting off the season in great form just like last season where he had 5 goals and 11 assists in 27 league games. Some honorable mentions defensively for this team of the season include Mohamed Simakan from RB Leipzig and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.
Midfield:
1. Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)
The 18 year old German prodigy is making the leap this season into a world class talent as he has 4 goals and 5 assists through 6 games this season. His performances have been truly phenomenal and I'm so excited to see him develop through his performance at Leverkusen along with his performance internationally. Last season he had 5 goals and 6 assists in 29 games with Leverkusen and he has already almost matched those numbers in just six games.
2. Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig)
The French superstar had a terrific champions league performance as he scored a hat trick in a 6-3 loss against Manchester City and his performances in the domestic league have been great as well. In 7 games so far he has 4 goals and 1 assist as he has helped Leipzig recover from a rocky start over the past two games. This is his third season with Leipzig and the 23 year old looks to make even further improvements and he might earn a spot on the France national team.

3. Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)
In my humble opinion, Joshua Kimmich is the best defensive midfielder in the world and the 26 year old German international is off to a great start in the early part of the season. Through 7 games he has 3 goals and 3 assists and his play defensively can't be measured on the stats sheet. I think he'll maintain this position on the team of the season all year. Honorable mentions in the midfield for team of the season include Kerem Demirbay (Leverkusen), Ellyes Skhiri (FC Koln) and Filip Kostic (Frankfurt).
Forwards:
1. Erling Haaland (Dortmund)
He has missed two Bundesliga games this season but Haaland is still tied with Lewandowski for the top goal scorer in league with 7 goals. He is undoubtedly the best striker in the world as he has also added 4 assists to his 7 goals through 5 Bundesliga games this season.
2. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
Lewandowski is simply a world class player as he finishes up the final couple months on what has been another fantastic year as he should be in the running for the Ballon d'or. Through 7 games this season with Bayern Munich he has 7 goals and 1 assist and is once again on pace to lead the league in scoring but Haaland does present some real competition to the 33 year old.
3. Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen)
His performance over the summer at the Euros made me believe that this could be a breakout year for him after he scored 9 goals in 29 games last season for Leverkusen. So far this season he has 6 goals through 7 games and has helped lead his team to a strong 5-1-1 start to put them tied with Bayern Munich. Honorable mentions for forwards in the Bundesliga include Andrej Kramaric (Hoffenheim), Moussa Diaby (Leverkusen) and Anthony Modeste (FC Koln).
